When to see an ALLERGIST
Many people experience chronic allergy symptoms that they control themselves using over-the-counter medications or with the help of their general physician. But how do you know when it is time to see a specialist to control your allergies?
There are many reasons to see a doctor who specializes in allergy.
Listed here are some common reasons:
- When medicines are not completly controlling symptoms or side effects of the medicines you take prevent their use.
- When symptoms get worse or expand into new areas. For example, first you have Spring allergies, but then have Spring and Fall allergies. Or when symptoms start with nasal problems and expand to coughing and wheezing.
- When you need to be evaluated for possible allergy to pets.
- When you need to be evaluated for allergies associated with your work or home environment.
- When there is a need to identify specific allergies so allergy shots (immunotherapy) can be used to decrease the severity or "turn off" allergic reactions.
If any of these reasons apply to you, it might be time to seek the expert help of a board-certified allergist.
